Sardar Ayaz Sadiq of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) became the Speaker of the National Assembly in Pakistan or the lower house of the parliament on Monday. The outgoing Speaker Dr Fahmida Mirza announced that Sadiq received 258 votes of the total 313 polled.

On the other hand, Shehryar Afridi of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) received 31 votes while Iqbal Qadri of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) got 23 votes. The previous ruling party, Pakistan Peoples Party withdrew its candidates for the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly prior to the poll. Members of Jamait ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), along with some significant individual candidates casted their vote for PML-N candidate.

Handing over charge to the new Speaker, Dr Mirza of PPP showed content and satisfaction while doing so. She wholeheartedly welcomed Saqid and wished him luck. Dr Mirza has served the National Assembly as Speaker for five years two months and 14 days. She was elected as the Speaker of the House on March 19, 2008 and served as Speaker till June 03, 2013.

“I always upheld decorum of the National Assembly and adopted a balanced approach during of my five years as Speaker,” Dr Mirza said.

After the oath-taking ceremony, the PML-N politicians celebrated their much predicted success and chanted slogans in favor of the party. Sadiq is now tasked to preside over the National Assembly’s session to elect the deputy speaker of the house.
