Being hosted by the Muslim-majority country Indonesia this September, the Miss World beauty pageant will not include bikini parade rather, 137 women contestants will sport a modest one-piece swimwear along with sarongs.
Miss World beauty pageant 2013 is being held on the resort island of Bali and Bogor, outside Jakarta where foreign tourists flock are spotted enjoying sunbath in revealing swimwear. But to avoid offense in this Muslim-majority host country Indonesia, the organizers have confirmed to axe bikini for the beach fashion section.
The upcoming Miss World contest stirred anger among Indonesia’s Muslim clerical body, the Indonesian Ulema Council who called for cancelling the pageant. The Council cleric Muhyidin Djunaedi accused this beauty pageant of “promoting hedonism, materialism and consumerism”, and also said that contestants are not positive role models for Muslim youth.
Miss World Organization chairwoman Julia Morley has also insisted that none of the Miss World contestants would wear a bikini.
“We treasure respect for all the countries that take part in the pageant,” Julia Morley said, adding that the final outfits had not yet been finalized.
