Family and friends of Ishrat Jahan found some closure on Wednesday when CBI defined the tragic incident as a ‘fake encounter’ by Gujarat Police. However, the CBI report stated that the conspirators of this fake encountered could not be identified.
“We are happy with the CBI report because it has proved that my sister was innocent and was killed (in a fake encounter). But we are not very happy because the names of those who conspired to kill her are yet to be mentioned. Whoever was behind the conspiracy should be hanged. I hope no one has to go through what we have suffered,” the victim’s sister Nusrat Jahan said.
In the meanwhile, BJP President Rajnath Singh has accused the UPA government for slowing down the CBI probe. He said the CBI has filed a charge sheet in it and the Congress has put CBI and IB against each other for their own political benefits.
Analysts believe that the charge-sheet filed by the CBI in 2004 is likely to play out politically in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. It has already set off a fresh round of clashes between BJP and the Congress.
“Everyone in Gujarat knows that this encounter was fake. During a period of three months, when there was talks about removing Modi as Chief Ministers, such encounters took place with frequent intervals propping up a theory that there was an attempt to murder Modi,” AICC General Secretary Madhusudan Mistri.
