Former Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani might have to appear in court and record his statement regarding the appointment of fugitive Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) chief, Tauqir Sadiq. Pakistani investigators brought Tauqir back to Pakistan from the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday.

Tauqir is named in an $850 million corruption case during his tenure as the chief of OGRA from 2009 to 2011. He was recently arrested in Abu Dhabi. The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has submitted an application against Mr Gilani to the Accountability Court Islamabad.

Before hiring Tauqir as the chief of OGRA, authorities advertised the post in 2008 and a summary was presented to the ex-premier for approval. The advertisement stated that an ideal candidate must be highly qualified, preferably postgraduate from internationally recognized institute, competent professional of known integrity and have an experience of 20 years related to law, business, engineering, finance, accounting, economics, petroleum technology, public administration or management.

Apparently, the list of short-listed candidates did not include the name of Tauqir Sadiq. However, then Principal Secretary to PM Siraj S Shamsuddin communicated the approval of Mr Gilani and also announced that the chairman selection committee will become the minister of water and power and cabinet secretary as member of the selection committee. The selection committee then included Raja Pervez Ashraf, then minister of water and power as chairman, Zafar Mehmood Cabinet Secretary, and Munir Ahmed, Joint Secretary Establishment Division, as members, Sikander Hayat Maiken, Joint Secretary Cabinet Division as secretary and Shaukat Hayat Durrani, expert member.
