Endorsing the decades old ties between Pakistan and China, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif gave his approval to build a new road connecting Gwadar with China. The said project will give boost to economic ties between both neighbors as trade across borders will become more convenient and fruitful.

The Premier attended a high-level meeting discussing the future of Pak-China Economic Corridor on Friday. Nawaz was briefed about the potential routes on which the road can be built. After the detailed briefing, Nawaz said the project is incredibly important for the economic wellbeing of Pakistan. He believes the advanced infrastructure will connect Pakistan with China and Central Asian countries while making it a hub of transit trade in the region.

During the discussion, PM Nawaz advised the concerned officials to further evaluate the proposal in terms of time and cost efficiency. The initial plan includes an economic corridor starting from the Khunjerab Pass and ending at Gwadar and Lahore-Karachi Motorway.

An alternative plan comprises of a shorter route along the KKH, connecting Chilas with Mansehra through the Babusar Top. The premier also directed to draft a feasibility plan for a road connecting Hawalian and Islamabad to provide a shorter route to commuters from Gilgit, Mansehra and Abbottabad.

“The distances must be reduced by building connecting bridges and tunnels by using the latest technologies and equipment,” PM Nawaz advised.

Finance Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal, Minister for Information and Broadcasting and National Heritage Pervez Rashid, Minister for Railways Khawaja Saad Rafiq and Special Assistant to Prime Minister Tariq Fatmi were present at the meeting.
