An appeals court in Bucharest this Friday doubled the sentence to six years for a Romanian diplomat who is convicted for a deadly hit-and-run accident in Singapore in 2009. Silviu Ionescu, Romania’s charge d’affaires in Singapore at that time was initially sentenced to three years of jail. He was found guilty of manslaughter for hitting three pedestrians in December 2009 while driving a car that belonged to the Romanian mission.

One of the pedestrians, a 30-year-old Malaysian, died. The appeals court also found him guilty of inflicting injuries and fleeing from the location of the crash, according to the ruling. During the trial, which started in 2010, the ex-diplomat repeatedly said he was framed by the Singaporean authorities because of the critical reports he sent to the Romanian foreign ministry as head of diplomatic mission in the city state.

In response to the media queries, a Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman said, ‘The Bucharest Court of Appeal delivered its verdict on the appeal relating to the hit-and-run case of Dr Silviu Ionescu, the former Romanian Chargé d’Affaires in Singapore, on February 13, 2014. Dr Ionescu’s initial sentence was increased from three to six years’ imprisonment. The Singapore government welcomes the decision by the Bucharest Court of Appeal to uphold Dr Ionescu’s convictions as well as to enhance his sentence.’Ionescu’s defence team repeatedly argued during the trial that he should be freed on the grounds that there was not even one direct evidence linking him to the crime. It was found that Ionescu had fled Singapore shortly after the incident.
