This Monday, Nitish Kumar chose the Mahadalit leader, Jitan Ram Manjhi to be the next chief minister of Bihar after the JD(U) MLAs agreed to his idea of stepping down and gave the power of choosing their next leader to him. Addressing the media after the announcement, Kumar said, “He (Jeetan Manjhi) is a very experienced leader who has contributed a lot to party.”

Manjhi, 68, is a MLA from Maqdumpur in Gaya, and is Nitish’s SC/ST welfare minister, who came in third behind the BJP and RJD candidates at the Gaya Lok Sabha seat this Friday. Manjhi is a close friend to Nitish and was not one of the many leaders who were expected to take the seat left by Nitish after he resigned this Saturday, taking “moral responsibility” for the JD(U)’s poor showing in the Lok Sabha election. Among the names in the mix earlier had been those of Rajput leader Bashishtha Narayan Singh and the Bhumihar minister Bijay Choudhary, besides Bijendra Yadav, Narendra Narayan Yadav, and also Sharad Yadav himself. Nitish had asked his party’s permission to leave the burden and responsibility of chief ministership so that he could work to strengthen the party after their porr performance in the elections.

After the meeting the Governor D Y Patil, Nitish said, “We have pressed the claim to form the next government under the leadership of Jitan Ram Manjhi. We have presented a list of 117 JD(U) MLAs, two Independents and one Left MLA who make up a simple majority in the depleted House of 239, four short of his usual strength.”
