opposition protests as lok sabha debates gujarat dalit assaultUnion home minister, Rajnath Singh, confirmed on Tuesday that nine suspects involved in the attacks on Dalits in Una, Gujarat have been arrested and four police official involved have been suspended. In a statement issued on the Una attack in the Lok Sabha, Rajnath Singh mentioned that “atrocity against Dalits is a social evil. We must take it up as a challenge. I urge all parties to come together to fight this.”

Rajnath stressed that PM Narendra Modi also condemned the attack as soon as he got to know about the incident. However, the home minister was keen to point out that despite the recent attack, there has been a sharp decline in attacks on Dalits in Gujarat since the BJP is in power. Rajnath reminded that “during Congress rule in Gujarat, number of cases of atrocities against Dalits were much high.”

Opposition parties led by Congress on Tuesday forced two adjournments of the Rajya Sabha in the pre-noon session over attacks of Dalits in Gujarat. Congress, BSP and TMC all recorded their vigorous condemnation of the attacks during the session. Derek O’Brien (TMC) stood up on his feet and mentioned that “Dalits are being oppressed in Gujarat but it is not being discussed here” adding that “this is an organised crime that is happening in Gujarat … this issue should be taken up,” as he reffered to the stripping and assault on some Dalit men in Gujarat allegedly by members of a local cow vigilante group
