A police officer and a father of six children died in the shooting that took place on a routine vehicle stopping in Tamworth, NSW on Friday.

David Rixon, senior constable highway patrol, died at the age of 40 with abdomen and stomach shots that proved to be fatal around 8 am. Backup police force, emergency teams, and paramedics arrived the crime scene in no time but the officer was badly wounded and died on his way in the ambulance even before reaching the hospital. He was taken to the Tamworth Base Hospital nonetheless.

Another crime scene individual who also has been suspected to have opened fire at the police officer was also taken to the hospital. He survived the gun shots and is in conscious condition at the hospital under police surveillance.

The incident took place outside an apartment in Lorraine Street where the officer pulled over the car in a routine check. The argument got heated up and loud noises were being heard by the neighborhood which was followed by gunshots. Detectives and other investigation teams are on the site working towards the cause of the quarrel and other evidence that might help spot the murderer.

Rixon had served the department for 22 years.

The police commissioner of NSW flew in from Sydney after hearing the tragic news. Andrew Scipion spoke to the media briefly and said, “It’s a tragedy beyond belief, unfortunately I have had to do this too many times, I have seen strong tough officers showing all the emotions that you would expect when you lose a mate, imagine what it would be like when you lose a father or a loved one”.
