Gillard government has decided to side in the favor of selection of the controversial minister Peter Slippers as the Speaker of the Parliament on Monday.

MP Peter Slipper is facing criminal charges in case of sexual harassment for which he has yet not been declared innocent and the government has decided to side with Slipper despite his charges. The decision of the case of sexual harassment against a male member is expected to be heard by the Federal Court sometime in the coming month. Slipper has been denying the charges.

Speaking to the media Ms. Gillard said, “I don’t claim to know Mr Slipper personally or well, but I formed a professional judgment about his ability to do the job.” She tried to explain that her decision to bring back Slippers was not based on some personal ties but are purely based on professional level. She also said that the decision taken by Slipper to come down from the seat was “appropriate”.

Opposition members, on the other hand, demand that both the cases against Slipper should be resolved before he resumes back to his position as the Speaker. Julie Bishop, Deputy Opposition leader, said, “Mr Slipper should stand aside until all of the allegations are resolved. The so-called party of the worker has shown no concern for the claimant, James Hunter Ashby, who has detailed his claims of sexual harassment in court documents.”
