The Coalition has presented its approach towards the asylum seeker boat arrivals if it wins government. Last week, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd voiced his opinion on the issue, which received harsh criticism from the opposition.

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott claims that his government will establish a special military-led taskforce to deal with the asylum seeker boat arrivals. He said a multi-agency taskforce led by a three-star military commander is the best way to deal with asylum seekers.

“This is one of the most serious external situations that we have faced in many a long year. That is why we need to have a senior military officer in operations control of this very important national emergency,” said Mr Abbott.

Abbott entitled the program as Operation Sovereign Borders and claimed that if the coalition comes to power, the program will be up and running within first 100 days of the government. It will include the representation of all 12 agencies involved in border security. On the other hand, PM Kevin Rudd dismissed the new policy as just another slogan.

“So we have two three-word slogans: stop the boats and operation sovereign something-or-other. The business of border security is a hard and tough business for any government of Australia. Mr Abbott doesn’t have an alternative; he has a three-word slogan,” said PM Rudd.
