The High Court granted conditional bail to Malaysia’s most controversial bloggers, Alvin Tan and Vivian Lee, on Thursday. The couple is known for uploading pornographic content and images on the social media and was recently charged for publishing offensive material with relevance to the Holy month of Ramzan.

High Court Judge Datuk Mohd Azman Husin granted bail at RM10,000 for each of the three charges faced by the bloggers. Tan and Lee are also directed to submit their passports with government authorities and remain banned from uploading any content or pictures that are pornographic, offensive or provocative. The two are also banned from using such smart-phones to upload racially sensitive content.

The couple invited trouble after it uploaded a photo of themselves eating pork. They also gave the picture a caption: Happy Breaking Fast. Tan and Lee are commonly known by their nickname, Alvivi. The two were also charged for uploading pornographic material during Ramzan. The majority believes that such controversial and offensive material is likely to cause religious enmity between people of different faiths.

“The applicants (Tan and Lee) tendered a public apology two days later, on July 14 for the greeting they made. This public apology shows contrition on their part and shows it is unlikely that they will repeat the offence if out on bail. The offences the applicants were charged with is not as serious as rape, rape of a minor or robbery, yet the accused in these cases are routinely granted bail,” counsel Chong Joo Tian said.
