Christchurch-CTV-buildingCanterbury Television is an independent television station broadcasting in Canterbury, New Zealand. Christchurch was home to a five story building, the headquarters of the broadcaster. The structure collapsed in the quake, at the height of the workday and it is thought that over 100 people died. Twenty-three bodies were pulled out on Thursday but the rest remain entombed in the rubble.

As well as the television station, the CTV building housed an English-language school which had dozens of foreign students. Students from Japan, Thailand, China and other Asian countries have potentially lost their lives. The CBC spoke of sorrow of one man from the Philippines whose wife was on her second day of classes at the school when the quake struck. She hasn’t been heard from since.

Hotel Grand Chancellor, Christchurch’s tallest building, has been reported to be on the verge of collapse. The quake displaced the 26-storey building by half a metre and one side has dropped by 1 metre. The building is thought to be irreparably damaged and has the potential to bring down other buildings if it falls. An area of a two-block radius had been cleared around the hotel.

As of this writing, there are apparently 98 confirmed dead with 226 unaccounted for. The death toll can only go up as it is known that over a hundred are lost in the collapse of the CTV building alone. It has been more than 24 hours since anyone was pulled from the wreckage alive so hope is quickly fading.

When the spire of the Christ Church Cathedral fell, it is believed that as many as 22 tourists were in it. This was a popular attraction in the city as the 63 metre spire afforded a great view of the downtown. The NZ Herald spoke of one woman who exited the structure just one minute before its collapse and she said there were people behind her. There can be no doubt there are no survivors. Police sniffer dogs reported no signs of life.
