UCC now ranked 181 in the worldA table that ranks universities shows that the Irish universities have fallen behind in the ranks in comparison to other colleges and schools in a global perspective.

The updated QS World University rankings show a sudden fall for most of universities in Ireland, with NUI Galway experiencing the most surprising and dramatic fall, which is down to 66 places to 298.

One more interesting case is seen from Trinity College Dublin which is 65th in the rankings, a fall of 13 places, while University College Dublin has dropped 20 places to 134th giving a big surprise to people around the world.

In 2010, Dublin City University recorded an increase in its ranking from 330 to 326 for 2011. But on the other hand in 2009, it had been ranked 279th.

Another big university known as University College Cork (UCC) also happened to see a rise to 181 from 184 last year. It was ranked 386th in 2006.

University College Cork (UCC) is also the first Irish university which has achieved a five-star rating in the rankings worldwide. The very new rating system was launched by QS to make simpler the comparison of universities on an international basis to let the world know of the efforts put by universities.

Dr Michael Murphy the president of University College Cork (UCC) said the very ranking reflected the hard work of the whole UCC community and marked it as an exceptional achievement.

Dr Michael Murphy said a highly world class university "requires resourcing at internationally competitive levels and for Trinity to sustain its position and increase further worldwide requires adequate investment in the university sector".
