Southwark Crown Court has heard that Vicky Pryce, the former cabinet minister Chris Huhne’s ex-wife, revealed to the press about taking speeding points for him to get revenge by destroying his career after getting informed of his extra-marital affair.
Ms. Pryce, 60, of Clapham, London, an economist, took speeding points for Mr. Huhne a decade ago.
She declines perverting the course of justice by taking the defense of marital coercion and is due to stand trial alone today. Mr. Huhne has admitted the same charge before court on Monday after changing his plea to guilty and a while later resigned as Liberal Democrat MP for Eastleigh and voluntarily removed himself from the Privy Council.
Opening the case at Southwark Crown Court, prosecutor Andrew Edis QC told the points-swapping offence came to light in 2010/2011 when Pryce leaked the story to a number of newspapers to “nail” his ex-husband.
Mr. Edis told the jury that the ending of a long marriage for another woman would undoubtedly be “a cause of immense distress to any wife, or husband come to that”.
“And there is no doubt at all that Ms Pryce was distressed. But there is also no doubt at all that she was not only distressed but extremely angry and she wanted some revenge. And her revenge was in the end to pass the story about the 2003 crime to the newspapers so that it would be published in the end, that it would destroy her husband’s career.”
