A murder inquiry is underway after a death in Sydenham.

Police were called to Lucas Court, Winchfield Road SE26, shortly before 03.20hrs on Sunday 5 September to reports of an injured man.

Officers and the ambulance service attended, and found a man in his 40s suffering stab wounds. He was treated by paramedics but pronounced dead at the scene.

Police believe they know the identity of the deceased and enquiries are underway to trace next of kin. We also await formal identification.

A post-mortem will be held on Monday 6 September – at a time to be fixed.

An incident room has opened at Lewisham under DCI Cliff Lyons [Homicide and Serious Crime Command].

Detectives retain an open mind at this early stage as to the circumstances of the incident and any motive.

DCI Cliff Lyons said: "We are asking anyone who was in the Bell Green area of Sydenham, and saw or heard anything in the vicinity of Lucas Court from around 03.00hrs, to come forward."

One man, aged 28 years, has been arrested in connection with this incident and is currently in custody at a south London police station.
