Labour leader Ed Miliband with a copy of The Sun newspaperLabour leader Ed Miliband has made a public apology after he was pictured while posing with a copy of The Sun newspaper.

Mr Miliband has to face the criticism of his party’s MPs as well as Merseyside councillors after he was pictured holding a special edition of the paper to mark the beginning of the World Cup which was distributed for free in the Liverpool. The senior Labour figures in the city expressed anger at his action for failing to take account of continuing fury over the tabloid’s coverage of the Hillsborough disaster of 1989.

The Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson has said: “Like everybody in this city I am really hurt and offended by Ed Miliband’s support for The Sun newspaper. Such clear support for that publication at any time would be wrong but at such a sensitive time is deeply shocking.

“For the leader of the Labour Party to make such an offensive gesture insults not only me but every person in the city.

“This is just another example of how out of touch the politicians in their ivory towers are from the lives of ordinary people.”

However, Mr Miliband’s spokesperson has told: “Ed Miliband was promoting England’s bid to win the World Cup and is proud to do so.

“But he understands the anger that is felt towards the Sun over Hillsborough by many people in Merseyside and he is sorry to those who feel offended.”

After seeing the image, Liverpool Labour Councillor Cllr Martin Cummins, who represents Croxteth, have resigned from the party as he has told that seeing Mr Miliband pose with The Sun had “rocked me to my core”.

He has written in his resignation letter to Mr Anderson: “We are the party of truth, justice and equality and we must stop compromising on our moral foundation just to win votes.”
