U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has joined the renowned Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie and Britain’s foreign minister William Hague on Friday in the call to end rape and sexual violence in conflict zones at a London conference on the topic.
At the final day of international conference on rape as a weapon of war in London that brought together representatives from more than 120 countries, Mr Kerry has said that it was time to banish sexual violence “to the dark ages”.
During the closing ceremony, the guest speaker Mr Kerry has said: “It’s time to ban sexual violence to the dark ages and history books where it belongs.
As a war veteran and as the father of two daughters, Mr Kerry considers the issue as personal to him as he has added: “We will not tolerate rape as a tactic of war and intimidation.
“Make no mistake: we can end this, establish new norms, hold those who commit those acts accountable and no longer tolerate these horrific tactics.”
Jolie, who has been campaigning on the issue for two years and co-hosted the four-day gathering on the summit, has said it had been an “emotional experience” but she was encouraged by the progress made.
The 39-year-old actress has told: “We have all come together based on a common desire to end war zone sexual violence, and we have mapped out every area of action we need to take.”
Ms Jolie has praised the male leaders’ openness to the problem due to which the issue was now “on the top table of international diplomacy”.
Mr Hague has said the summit had provided him with “renewed optimism” and has also urged that the army of people determined to end rape being used as a weapon “is not going to be disbanded”.
