Tory backbencher Mark Pritchard has been arrested and bailed, following an alleged rape incident in central London.
The British lawmaker has been the MP for The Wrekin in Shropshire since 2005.
The Wrekin MP had voluntarily attended Holborn Police Station on Tuesday evening on suspicion of rape claim. He was then released on police bail after four hours.
A Scotland Yard spokesperson has said: “We can confirm that a 48-year-old man voluntarily attended a north London police station on Tuesday, December 2 where he was arrested, following an allegation of rape in central London.
“He has been bailed to a date in early January 2015 pending further inquiries.”
The news came to light after the Parliamentary “Hansard” record had a reference to a letter from Met officer Sandra Looby to the speaker of the House of Commons John Bercow sent on Wednesday, saying: “I write to inform you that on December 2 Mark Pritchard MP was arrested at 6.14pm at Holborn Police Station in London by Metropolitan Police Service officers.
“Mr Pritchard was questioned by police and released on police bail later the same evening at 10.16pm.”
A Conservative Party spokesman has stated: “This is a police matter. It would be inappropriate to comment while an investigation is taking place.”
The Tory MP had recently admitted ‘seriously considering’ defecting to U.K. Independence Party (UKIP) during 2013, but had now shown determination of sticking with the Conservatives.
Mr Pritchard is a member of the U.K. joint national security strategy committee and vice-chairman of the Conservative foreign affairs and defence parliamentary committee.
