Toronto Fire officials revealed that the residents of a house, a mother and her 26-year-old son, walked approximately one kilometre before reporting that their Scarborough home was on fire. The officials confirmed that the blaze engulfed the home located on Bethune Boulevard, near Kingston and Markham Roads. The fire reportedly started at approximately 3 a.m., after which the neighbours called 911 even before the home’s residents did. The mother and her adult son walked to a gas station before calling 911.

In his remarks, Toronto Fire Platoon Chief Dan Fraser stated that “that was kind of strange,” adding that “they walked three-quarters of a mile to an Esso station and called 911 from there. That’s where the police met them and transported them to Scarborough General (Hospital).” In addition to that, it was explain that the woman received treatment for smoke inhalation and the son suffered second-degree burns to his hands and arms. A dog was killed in the fire too.

According to fire officials, the fire caused an estimated loss of $250,000 in damage to the home. Officials speculated the fire to have started in the son’s bed, in the basement of the home, by either hair dryer being used to keep the bed warm or a lit cigarette placed on the bed. Fraser explained that the son alleged to have got up and smelled smoke. He went to get some water to put out the flames, but by that time the bed was completely engulfed and it soon reached up till the second floor.
