Prime Minister David CameronBritish Prime Minister David Cameron has received a call from a hoax caller claiming to be the top spy chief of the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) that prompted an immediate security review at the Downing Street on Monday.

However, the Downing Street told Mr Cameron had ended the call after realising that the caller was an imposter and did not disclose any sensitive information.

The Prime Minister had been walking in his Witney, Oxfordshire in central England on Sunday when his BlackBerry phone rang and he was told there would be a conference call with Robert Hannigan, the head of Britain’s eavesdropping agency.

Mr Cameron has stated: “A voice came through, a voice I didn’t recognise. The voice said he was sorry to wake me up, which I thought was strange as it was 11 o’clock in the morning.

So I quite rapidly asked ‘who is this?’ to which the answer came ‘it is a hoax call,’ and so I pushed the red button on the BlackBerry which ended the call.”

Another embarrassing incident led to unveil that hours earlier, GCHQ was also tricked into giving out Hannigan’s mobile phone number to the same hoaxer, although the government confirmed the number was not used to discuss any confidential information.

A government spokeswoman has said: “Following two hoax calls to government departments today, a notice has gone out to all departments to be on the alert for such calls.

“Both GCHQ and No 10 take security seriously and both are currently reviewing procedures following these hoax calls to ensure that the government learns any lessons from this incident.”
