39-year-old man, Ofonime Sunday Inuk, has claimed that he was kept as slave by a doctor and his wife, 60-year-old trained obstetrician Emmanuel Edet and 58-year-old gynecologist Antan, for 24 years and so he was not allowed to keep his passport for more than 10 years. According to Inuk, he left Nigeria in 1989 at the age of 14 years and accompanied the couple from Nigeria to Israel before arriving in the UK.

The jury at Harrow crown court heard that the trio stayed at various addresses with the couple’s family, where Inuk cleaned and looked after their home and children. In his remarks, Inuk pointed out that he was told to speak in their native language so that he would become more dependent on the Edets, leading him to believe that he did not have any choice but to stay with them. Inuk explained that he was often threatened that if he reported matters to the police he would be arrested as an illegal immigrant and sent back to Nigeria.

The couple from Perivale, north-west London, has pleaded not guilty to holding a person in slavery and servitude, including the charges of assisting unlawful immigration and cruelty to a person under the age of 16. The claimant is now supposed to provide evidence on Thursday at the north-west London court from behind a screen so that he could not see his alleged tormentors. He is anticipated to show a copy of his passport, which he said he had not seen since 2001.
