British Airways flight BA6234 from Port Elizabeth to OR Tambo International Airport faced serious landing issues after its landing gear collapsed soon after touching down in Johannesburg. The emergency crews took control of the situation and evacuated 94 passengers and six crew on board in a timely and safe manner. The Boeing 737-400 plane is owned and operated by South African franchise Comair.

The South African authorities are currently investigating the cause of the incident. Meanwhile, no injuries were reported after the incident as passengers recalled to have seen sparks during landing. According to a statement issued by Comair, the plane experienced a landing gear problem shortly after touching down, at around midday local time (10:00 GMT). The company stated that “the aircraft was on the runway for a short period performing standard landing procedures when the crew noticed an unusual vibration which was followed shortly by the collapse of the left landing gear.”

One of the passengers on board, Warren Mann, revealed that the pilot announced to passengers that the left landing gear had broken off. He elucidated that “we could see sparks as the left wing and the engines were scraped across the runway,” adding that “the wing seemed completely broken off.” Meanwhile the company that owns the airport, Airports Company South Africa, confirmed that the runway was temporarily closed, which caused some delays, but it is back to normal now. Operating the regional and local flights in South Africa, Comair, uses British Airways planes but its pilots and cabin crew are not from British Airways.
