pm may tells cabinet to ‘get on with the job’In a meeting with her new Cabinet, UK Prime Minister Theresa May stressed that it must “get to it and get on with the job” as the top team gathered for its first meeting in No 10. During a 90-minute discussion, Mrs. May revealed that she would be taking control of three new high-level committees to drive through plans for Brexit as well as social and economic reform.

In her remarks, Mrs. May stated that senior ministers that “politics is not a game” and insisted that quitting the European Union presented a “huge opportunity” and pledged to make government work for everyone, not just the privileged few. The Prime Minister’s official spokeswoman mentioned in a statement that “the Prime Minister concluded with the fact that Brexit presented a huge opportunity and it was now time to get to it and get on with the job.” The three new Cabinet committees to be chaired by the PM will include committees on the economy and industrial strategy, exiting the European Union and international trade, and social reform.

Upon inquiry about if the move was prompted to prevent any potential turf wars between Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, Brexit Secretary David Davis and International Trade Secretary Liam Fox, Mrs. May’s spokesperson responded that “it’s because the issues that they (the committees) will be discussing go to the heart of her agenda, the top priorities for this government and the challenges that we face as a country.” It was mentioned that “this idea that it is in some way to manage relations between other Cabinet ministers and things, that is not what it is about,” adding that “at Cabinet this morning you saw the Prime Minister really encouraging a collective government approach.”
