FrankfurtAirportAround 3.20pm local time, outside the Frankfurt airport, a gunman fired on a U.S. military bus and killed two servicemen and wounded two others. The four American casualties were all airmen based in the U.K.

A 21-year-old Kosovan man has been arrested but as of yet, the police have not named the suspect and no one knows the motivation behind the shooting. It is unclear if this was an act of terrorism.

Of the two survivors, one suffered serious wounds and the other less serious injuries although both apparently had been shot in the head and chest.

ABC is now saying that the gunman shouted “Allah Akbar” before opening fire and they refer to him as an ethnic Albanian. He apparently boarded the bus and managed to fire nine times before his gun jammed and he was subdued by other passengers.

The servicemembers who were attacked were members of a Security Forces team assigned to RAF Lakenheath in Great Britain. They were en route to support Overseas Contingency Operations, although their exact destination was not stated.

According to the Guardian:

The worst previous attack on US soldiers in Germany was in 1986, when a bomb was planted in a Berlin disco. Two soldiers died along with a Turkish woman, and 230 people were injured. The US blamed Libya and bombed Tripoli and Benghazi. During the 1970s and 80s, the leftwing German terror group Red Army Faction repeatedly targeted US soldiers in Germany.
