Andrew Shizgal was serving a 10 year sentence for several residential break and enters when he simply walked away from the minimum security Ferndale Institution in Mission BC on the 23rd day of May 2011. He had only 18 months left to serve before being eligible for parole.

On June 7th a Burnaby family noticed their BMW had been stolen and that their house had been burglarized. They immediately called BMW Corporate Offices and had their GPS locator system activated. Burnaby RCMP quickly located the car in North Burnaby and placed it under surveillance. With the assistance of the Air One helicopter, members of Burnaby RCMP tracked the stolen car to South Burnaby where the Prolific Offender Team moved in.

Shizgal was confronted and arrested without incident after he parked the car and attempted to leave on foot. He faces two counts of Break Enter and Theft and one of Obstructing a Peace Officer in Burnaby. He faces a further charge of Escaping Lawful Custody in Mission. Shizgal appeared in B.C. Provincial Court on June 8th, 2011 to answer to these charges.
