One dead on fishing expedition, Cheakamus River, BC

On August 6, 2011 at 3:43 pm, Whistler RCMP were contacted by a commercial fishing guide who advised that two of her clients had fallen in the Cheakamus River and were swept away by the fast moving current. This occurred approximately 3 km east of Highway 99, 20 km south of Whistler.

Search and Rescue was immediately activated and members trained in Swift Water Rescue techniques attended to the area by helicopter. At approximately 5:15 pm, Search and Rescue members searching via helicopter located the body of a male floating face down in the river. Searchers were able to get to the male in the difficult terrain and confirm that he was deceased.

Search efforts are continuing for the other person, a female who has not yet been located. The river is flowing moderately and conditions on the river are described as hazardous. Searching will continue until nightfall and resume in the morning.
