The Calgary Police Service Child Abuse Unit has charged a 32-year-old man in connection with yesterday’s assault on a baby.

At approximately 4:15 a.m., on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011, officers responded to a 911 call in the 1000 block of Cranston Drive S.E.

When officers arrived they quickly made entry into the home and arrested an agitated man who had slashed an 11-month-old boy several times. After securing the man’s arrest, officers then provided critical First Aid to the baby, who had suffered serious wounds. The child was then transported by EMS to a local hospital in critical condition. The child is now stable and his condition is improving. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Officers have since spoken to the child’s mother and have determined she was not at home at the time of the incident. The accused in this case is the child’s father.

The identity of the accused, who is charged with one count of attempted murder, is being withheld to protect the identity of the child. His first court appearance is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 15, 2011, at 9 a.m.
