On Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at approximately 4:30 p.m., Central East Division Officers were called to the Midtown Mall on John Street in Oshawa regarding a male, armed with a knife, who was causing a disturbance.
The male was seen kicking and punching windows at a business inside the mall and was confronted by an employee. The suspect brandished a knife and the employee retreated. A DRPS Officer approached and ordered the suspect, at gunpoint, to drop the weapon. The suspect turned toward the officer while holding the knife, but then ran out of the mall through a west door.
Responding officers cornered the suspect outside, on the west side of the mall and eventually convinced the male to drop the knife. He was arrested without incident and there were no injuries. No shots were fired and the Taser was not used.
Members of the DRPS Mental Health Response Unit were also called to assist with the investigation. A 22-year-old male of No Fixed Address (Oshawa) is facing multiple weapons charges and has been recommended for a mental health assessment.
