Murder suspected after human remains found in Stouffville

Investigators working out of the York Regional Police Homicide Unit are releasing the identity of human remains that were discovered on Saturday, August 27, 2011, in the area Warden Avenue and St. John’s Sideroad in the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville.

As a result of an ongoing investigation, York Regional Police, with the assistance of the Office of the Coroner, have identified the remains as those of Peter GAVIN, 67, of the Town of East Gwillimbury.

On Wednesday, August 24, 2011, York Regional Police received a call to check the well being of Mr. Gavin at his residence but were unable to locate him. A missing person investigation was initiated to determine his whereabouts.

On Saturday, August 27, 2011, at approximately 11:30 a.m., a local citizen in the Warden Avenue and St. John’s Sideroad area discovered what appeared to be human remains. The remains were transported to the Coroner’s building in Toronto where experts examined the remains and were able to identify as those of Mr. Gavin. It is believed that Mr. Gavin had been missing for approximately two months prior to be reported missing to police.

The Homicide Unit has taken carriage of this investigation as it is believed that Mr. Gavin has died as a result of foul play. His death has now been deemed a homicide.
