The teenage boy accused of York police officer’s murder is paralyzed from the abdomen and “extremely depressed,” says his lawyer. The boy, who has been kept away from the media due to his young age is “aware of everything and he’s devastated by the whole thing,” lawyer David Berg informed the journalists outside Newmarket court on Thursday.
He added: “He’s a kid, he’s 15 and he’s growing up very fast.”
The 15 year old boy was accused of first-degree manslaughter after Const. Garrett Styles was dragged for 300 metres and then pinned under a mini-vehicle while trying to catch the driver in June. Ever since, the boy has not entered a plea. The teenager was scheduled to come to court via an audio link today, but the trial was delayed until Oct. 28.
Moreover, the lawyer said the boy who is “severely paralyzed,” might never be able to walk on his own again. He did not undergo any brain damage in the car collision that killed Styles and is able to talk normally.
The lawyer added: “He’s extremely depressed about the situation and the family is really saddened about the death of Const. Styles. It’s just a very bad situation.”
