A police officer from Detroit named Weekley was charged in the manslaughter of a 7 year old girl who was shot to death during a break-in on her home that was being shadowed by a reality television crew.

After a yearlong investigation by Michigan Police into the killing of Aiyana Stanley-Jones who died in May 2010, an involuntary manslaughter charge has been applied on the police officer, who also faces a charge of careless discharge of a firearm causing death.

The judge of the accused put a not guilty plea at an afternoon court hearing. The involuntary manslaughter charge has a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison.

The lawyer named Steve Fishman said” The shooting itself tears them up; I don’t think anybody realizes how their lives change. People think they’re androids and robots, and they’re wrong, he knows he was acting as a police officer in a dangerous mission,”

Aiyana was on the first floor sitting on a sofa of a two-family home when Detroit police tossed a flash-bang grenade through a window and burst through the front door. Detroit police have said Weekley’s gun unintentionally shot after he was bumped or pushed by the grandmother of Aiyana
