California bans tanning devices for under 18’s

Governor Jerry Brown from California has banned the minors from using tanning beds. He signed the bill on Sunday will prevents every one below 18 years of age to use the tanning instruments.

By doing so, California has become the first State in the U.S to impose the ban on minors for the use of tanning devices.

In the past, California had barred minors under the age of 14 from using tanning beds, but permitted those between 14 and 18 years of age to use tanning beds with parental permission.

The Governor’s office released a statement saying that the bill was signed to improve health and well being of the residents of California.

The bill’s sponsor, state Senator Ted Lieu, said in a statement “I praise Gov. Brown for his courage in taking this much-needed step to protect some of California’s most vulnerable residents — our kids — from what the ‘House of Medicine’ has conclusively shown is lethally dangerous: ultraviolet-emitting radiation from tanning beds, If everyone knew the true dangers of tanning beds, they’d be shocked. Skin cancer is a rising epidemic and the leading cause of cancer death for women between 25 and 29.”

The new legislation will become effective from 1st January 2012.
