The election campaign of Saskatchewan is to outset Monday when Premier Brad Wall requests the lieutenant-governor to dissolve the legislature and call for elections of Nov. 7. Experts call it a two horse race: the leading Saskatchewan Party secures 38 of the legislature’s 58 seats and Democrats have the rest of the 20 seats to themselves.

According to University of Regina professor Ken Rasmussen, the electors of Saskatchewan have never ousted a government after one term in the post-war period. He says the opposition New Democrats will have a tough competition to maintain their numbers.

Rasmussen says: “There really are no other parties. I mean the Liberals have collapsed entirely in the province and the Green Party is floundering as well … I think it’s safe to say after this election we’ll be a two-party system.”

He also said that the upcoming election outcomes are perhaps a predetermined conclusion.

He added: “It would take a monumental event to shift the numbers significantly in favour of the NDP. This may be the first time in Saskatchewan’s history where a governing party picks up more seats in its second go-round than it got in the first one. Usually that’s not the case.”
