According to the latest update, both men who were shot in an east Ottawa mall were identified as criminals – one was involved in several assault cases.

On Wednesday, two men were shot dead at Gloucester Centre shopping mall. According to the court, 35-year-old Graham Thomas was scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 17 for the hearing of an assault case, while 32-year-old Jason Chapman was involved in a drug trafficking case. Chapman was charged with drug trafficking in July 2007.

According to court records, Thomas escaped allegations and jail time in four other cases of assault and drugs. All these cases were withdrawn during an eight-year period between 1997 and 2005.

Thomas and Chapman are the city’s eighth and ninth homicide victims of the year. Ottawa police Duty Insp. Mike Maloney said there had not yet been any arrests in the shooting.

An onlooker, Ahmed Hammoud said: “It’s pretty crazy. This is the first time I’ve seen so many police cars at the same time. I see more than four cars at the same time and it’s serious.”

Moreover, Trever Proulx, the assistant manager at the Mongolian Village Grill, said, “They (cops) came around and said to shut everything down.”
