St. John’s youth charged with four counts of arson

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Major Crime Unit has charged a 16 year old male with four separate Criminal Code charges in relation to the residential fire that occurred on Springdale Street.

At approximately 4:00 this morning, RNC Patrol officers and firefighters from St. John’s Regional Fire Department responded to a residential fire on Springdale Street in ST. John’s, NL. The residential home sustained extensive damage as a result and a 54 year old male was found deceased inside the home. Four additional persons were transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, believed at this point to be minor in nature. RNC Fire investigators deemed the fire to be suspicious and the Major Crime Unit has now formally charged a 16 year old St. John’s male with three counts of Arson – Disregard for human life and one count or Arson relating to property damage. Additional Criminal Code charges are pending.

Although officers have positively identified the deceased, personal information will not be released at this time as the next of kin have not yet been notified. Major Crime Officers are continuing their investigation.
