Helen Kadong Clement, a 20 year old girl is the South Sudan’s Miss Malaika 2011 winner after beating 15 other contestants last Saturday in Juba.

Helen Kadong who comes from Eastern Equatoria State (EES) emerged victorious during the finals held on the 26th November 2011 at Nyakuron Cultural Centre in Juba.

Following her victory, Helen Kadong from the Budi County of EES becomes the first South Sudanese Miss Malaika after independence and the sixth since South Sudan Miss Malaika was initiated in the country.

Rachel Angeth from Lakes State took the last year’s Miss Malaika fifth position after beating other 14 contestants.

“I really thank the judges to have played their role, I really dint expect to win,” Kadong said joyously.

The winner walked away with a car and a laptop, the other gifts yet to be formalized are her life insurance cover, opportunities to travel abroad to represent South Sudan on lifestyle in the international scene among others.

Meanwhile, 18 year old Bhakita Nyalia from Unity State and 21 year old Nancy John from Upper Nile State took the second and the third positions respectively.

The 4th and 5th winners got laptops pending other opportunities separately from the 2011 crowned Miss Malaika package.

The first three winners are also to become celebrities of the three sponsoring companies; MTN, UAP insurance, Target Media and Imatongas.

22 girls contested for this year’s Miss Malaika. However, six were eliminated during the preliminary selections last month.

“We encourage them to work as a team, the Ministry of Youths and Culture has always supported Miss Malaika South Sudan. We advise them to unite and execute successful projects,” said Lam Tungwar, the Chairperson of the South Sudan Association for Artists, (SSAA) the official event organizers.

Lam added that, the yearly Miss Malaika South Sudan is an initiative aimed at empowering women and promoting the South Sudanese Culture.

Alhaj Mohamed Baballa, the Mayor of Juba Town who was one of the key government guests yesterday encouraged the youths to actively be involved in such developmental initiatives.

Miss Malaika South Sudan started years back following the signing of the historic and now expired Comprehensive Peace Agreement, (CPA) in 2005.

The beauty contest is conducted yearly objectively to help South Sudanese girls to discover their beauty and talents. The beauty pageants are drawn all over the 10 States of South Sudan to contest.

The contestants also have a chance to travel abroad to contest for big beauty pageantry competitions such as Miss Earth and Miss World.
  
Since its inception, the event has received wider support both from the government, the business community and individuals who offer a wide range of awards.
