NDP demands an evaluation of a training program for senior federal bureaucrats, which made Canadians pay heavy taxes to finance their travel.
According to MP Alexandre Boulerice of NDP, federal government’s $145 million per year Advanced Leadership Program is way too costly, particularly when taxpayers are already making financial sacrifices.
Stephen Taylor, well-known Canadian blogger writes: “I think this is low-hanging fruit for strategic and operational review. This sort of spending by bureaucrats for training is ridiculous. I don’t know why a Canadian bureaucrat needs to go to Mexico to find out how they do administration.”
Boulerice said well-trained bureaucrats have their own significance, but there could be more economical alternatives to the international trips such as video conferencing.
In the meantime, the Liberal Party is questioning the timing of Taylor’s blog article and all the information he mentioned in it.
Liberal MP John McCallum said: “If this is a leak from the government to friendly bloggers about what they’ve already decided to cut, I don’t think that’s a correct, transparent way to go around the business.”
McCallum asked Treasury Board president Tony Clement to validate the usefulness of the Conservative government-created program to the government operations committee.
