Late Jack Layton’s family welcomed a new baby Thursday. The former NDP leader’s daughter, Sarah, gave birth to a baby girl named Solace Huxley Layton Campbell, in Toronto.

Solace is the couple’s second child. She was born at Sunnybrook Hospital at 2:15 a.m. and weighs in at 9.4 pounds. According to MP Olivia Chow, both mother and daughter are healthy.

Chow said: “To experience that baby coming out, (its) first breath, it was just magical. The cycle of life continues.”

She said the name Solace reminds her of the sun.

“Solace – it is comfort and warm.”

“It was really joyous; you can’t get sad when a baby is coming.”

Late Layton’s widow offered champagne to all the family members who gathered to celebrate.

Jack Layton was suffering from cancer when he passed away on Aug. 22.

In the eulogy delivered by Sarah Layton in Toronto, she said: “You’ve been a city councillor, the deputy mayor of Toronto, the honourable member for Toronto-Danforth, the leader of her majesty’s loyal Opposition.

“But most of all, I will remember you as Grandpa Jack — fun-loving, smiling, with all the time in the world, having a tea party on the floor with Beatrice.”
