Two young boys have been taken into custody in the shooting death of five-year-old Ethan Yellowbird, says the RCMP in Hobbema, Alta. Police suspects another young person in the child’s murder but he is not yet arrested.
The case update was announced at an 11 a.m. news conference in Hobbema by RCMP officers who were accompanied by Chief Marvin Yellowbird, Ethan’s grandfather.
According to the RCMP, three young men are charged with manslaughter, intentional discharge of a firearm and endangering life. Two of them have been arrested and are to appear in court in Wetaskiwin on Tuesday morning.
The identity of arrested teens cannot be disclosed in abidance of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
The young kid, Ethan Yellowbird, was shot to death in July while he was sleeping at his father’s house.
“The death of five-year-old Ethan Yellowbird was a tragedy to the entire community, including the RCMP officers who know the local kids,” Staff Sgt. Charlie Wood said.
“What stands out, to me, is that right from the early days of shock and the grief, this community was asking the RCMP, ‘What can we do to help you solve this crime?’ That is the attitude that has helped us solve this case.”
According to Insp. Garrett Wolsey, the arrests took place with the help of witnesses and the determination of investigators.
