On Tuesday, March 6, 2012 the EPS homicide Section arrested a man in relation to the March 12, 2008 death of 26-year-old Shernell Sharon Pierre.

Almost four years to the day, and after thousands of hours interviewing witnesses, reviewing video, and analyzing forensic evidence, a strong and dedicated investigative team has charged Devon Hugh Saunders, 43, with first degree murder.

Background

At 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, Edmonton Fire Rescue alerted police after the discovery of what turned out to be the body of an adult person inside a burnt out vehicle on 170 Street and 87 Avenue.

The autopsy was completed and the victim identified. The death of Shernell Pierre was determined to be the result of homicide.

It is believed Pierre left her job through the front doors of the Misericordia Hospital shortly after 11 p.m. She then walked to her vehicle, which was found about 15 minutes later burning on 170 Street just south of 87 Avenue.
