With warmer weather upon us, the York Regional Police Auto Cargo Theft Unit reminds the public to take precautions with respect to where they keep their vehicle keys.

In order to enjoy summer weather it’s not uncommon for residents to leave their front screen doors open, which can provide a view and easy access into the front hall. Precautions should be taken not to leave vehicle keys, wallets, purses or other valuables in plain view in your entrance way. It is also important to lock your door at all times to prevent easy access into your home.

Keys and other items left in highly-visible areas are more likely to be targeted by thieves. Thieves have been known to check residences for vehicle keys left out in the open or in jackets and purses. Suspects then use the keys to steal vehicles right out of the driveway.

Criminals are opportunists. It is important not to give them the opportunity to make you a victim of crime.

Avoid becoming a victim of this type of theft. Crime prevention is the responsibility of both the public and the police.
