Pedestrian man dies due to train struck near 99 Street

A pedestrian was struck and killed earlier this morning, Wednesday, June 20, 2012, while attempting to circumvent the crossing arms near 99 Street and the Whitemud Freeway.

Edmonton Police Service Traffic Section investigators confirm the male, 46, pushing a grocery store buggy, attempted to crawl under the lowered crossing arms, before being struck by a south-bound CP train.

Traffic is being affected in two locations:

– 51 Avenue east of Gateway Boulevard

– Whitemud overpass at Calgary Trail.

Whitemud Drive is unaffected. Police will be on scene through the morning rush hour, and encourage commuters to use an alternate route on their way to work this morning.

Canadian Pacific Police are also on scene and conducting an investigation.
