HRM Partners in Policing are warning citizens, particularly those who work in the floral industry about a fraud-related file they are investigating.

Police have received a complaint regarding a web based company defrauding local florists. A representative from the company has contacted at least one florist in HRM offering them an opportunity to be the local distributor for any on-line orders for this area in exchange for an annual fee. The florist has filled several orders but has not received payment from the web-based company. Anyone who has been a victim of such a scam is encouraged to report it to the HRP/RCMP Integrated Financial Crime Unit at 490-1985.

The following tips that will help prevent similar frauds.

• Always deal with reputable companies
• Verify with the information including company name, address and phone number
• Verify the authenticity of the company through the Better Business Bureau
• Insist on a detailed quote of the work required
• Ensure the receipt or work order includes the company name, address and phone number
• Report suspicious activity to police

Remember, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
