On April 8, 2010, the Moncton Customs and Excise Section seized 290 000 contraband cigarettes during a routine traffic stop on Highway 2 near the Mapleton exit in Moncton. A 47-year-old man and a 34-year-old man were arrested for being in possession of the illegal goods.

The men were released from custody and are scheduled to appear in Moncton Provincial Court in October 2010 to face related charges. Investigators believe the illegal cigarettes were destined for Nova Scotia.

The investigation is ongoing.

The traffic in contraband tobacco is harmful to our communities, and the RCMP urges anyone with information about the sale or purchase of illegal tobacco to contact their local police or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
