John Baird, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada, made an announcement on Wednesday officially disclosing the news of veteran diplomat Guy Saint-Jacques being appointed as Canada’s new ambassador to China.

Saint-Jacques has been appointed at a very sensitive time of Canada’s political and economic affiliation with China. Both countries are in struggle of a closer trade alliance, as the Canadian government recently eyes the proposal of a Chinese state-owned oil giant’s takeover of the Canadian energy producer Nexen. Saint-Jacques is known to be persuasive in Mandarin and has had his fair share of experience with China. This is his fourth posting in People’s Republic of China, having previously worked in Hong Kong and Beijing.

Baird admitted openly that this appointment has been done at a “very important time,” and referred to Saint-Jacques as one of best public servants of his generation. Baird mentioned that “he’ll have close links right to the top, both with me and the prime minister, senior leadership of the public service and business communities here in Canada.” He added that “the relationship with China is obviously a growing one.”

Saint-Jacques will be succeeding former ambassador David Mulroney. He acclaimed that he is hoping to honestly promote the Canadian interests and values in a country that is “key to our future prosperity.” He admitted that “there will be many challenges ahead on the trade and economic side,” explaining further that “however, much work remains to ensure that our companies have greater access to the Chinese market and we have to continue to address very forcefully the present trade imbalance.”
