Mississauga gym teacher Michael Albert Russell charged in historical sexual abuse investigation

Investigators from the Special Victims Unit have arrested a teacher in relation to a historical sexual abuse investigation.

The alleged offences involve a male teen, which began when the teen was 16 years of age and span over a period of approximately two years, beginning around the fall of 1992.  The accused and victim were known to each other, as the accused was the victim’s gym teacher and volleyball coach.    

On Monday October 29, 2012 police charged, Michael Albert Russell, 51 years-old of Mississauga, with several counts of sexual assault and sexual exploitation. 

Mr. Russell will appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton on December 3, 2012 to answer to the charges.

Investigators are concerned that there may be additional victims. Mr. Russell was a Physical Education teacher at Applewood Heights Secondary School during the early 1990’s. He also worked at Central Peel, West Credit, JA Turner and for the past 14 years at Rick Hansen Secondary School.  Mr. Russell is also known to have coached volleyball at various external associations around the GTA.
