The cabinet minister of the times of Trudeau, Robert Kaplan, who overlooked all the reformation of RCMP and the formation of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, has passed away at the age of 75. Kaplan will always be remembered among the Jewish community as the man who persuaded Canada to get rough with Nazi war criminals. The 75-year-old former solicitor general was suffering from cancer.

The very first condolence posted on Twitter, was from an Interim Liberal Leader, Bob Rae, who said that I’m “so sorry to advise of Robert Kaplan’s passing — he was a good friend to many who contributed much to Canadian politics and public life.” After Rae continued a long list of condolences and well wishes from entire Twitter community.

Kaplan was born in Toronto and studied corporate and tax law before he began his career as a politician in late 1960s at the time of Pierre Elliott Trudeau’s leadership campaign. Kaplan was elected as a member of the House of Commons from two different Toronto ridings beginning in the 1970s and continued politics until 1993. He was nominated as a solicitor general by Trudeau in 1980. It was at that time that he overlooked the revamping of RCMP and the establishment of CSIS and the Young Offenders Act.

A criminology professor at Simon Fraser University, Neil Boyd, claimed in an email that “Robert Kaplan was a committed public servant who was kind and thoughtful in dealing with those of us who would often disagree with him.” Boyd asserted that “he had a relaxed and friendly approach to others, always seeking to find a common ground on the very difficult terrain of crime and punishment.”
