One of the largest investigations in the history of Lower Mainland was triggered after discovering an explosive device at the local transit system. Now the transit police force has set up a security model being used in New York, and insists that this security model will be a leading key to such serious investigation.

The explosive equipment was found on the SkyTrain track on Friday afternoon, almost midway between Surrey’s Scott Road and Gateway stations. The investigators have not yet found out how, when, and what type of explosive was used. The riders of the local transit system reported on Monday that there was an extremely enhanced security system put in.

The spokesperson of Transit Police, Anne Drennan, explained that the force has installed a system called TOMS – Transit Order Maintenance Sweeps. Ms. Drennan was speaking at the Vancouver’s bustling Commercial-Broadway station when she stated that “It’s a very simple approach, but it’s been extremely effective in New York, given that they have emergency situations quite often.” She further added that “officers stand on the platform to greet the trains and they stand just outside the doors. When the doors open and the passengers get off, our officers then step onto the train, do a visual assessment, greet the people on the train and step back off.”

Ms. Drennan asserted that most important issue at the moment is to give the passengers “reassurance of a highly visible uniform presence, which is key right now.” The Surrey incident has provoked searches at other Lower Mainland transit hubs.
