Town of East Gwillimbury man Cristian Chis charged with first degree murder

Investigators with the York Regional Police Homicide Unit have arrested two suspects in relation to the murder of Peter Gavin, 67, of the Town of East Gwillimbury.

On Wednesday, August 24, 2011, York Regional Police received a call to check the well being of Mr. Gavin at his residence but were unable to locate him. A missing person investigation was initiated to determine his whereabouts. 

On Saturday, August 27, 2011, a local citizen in the Warden Avenue and St. John’s Side Road area discovered what appeared to be human remains, later identified as Mr. Gavin. It is believed that Mr. Gavin had been missing for approximately two months prior to it being reported to police.

On Wednesday, December 12, 2012, investigators arrested two suspects without incident in relation to Mr. Gavin’s death.

Charged:

– Cristian Chis, 25, of the Town of East Gwillimbury

Charges:

– First Degree Murder

Charged:

– Katie Shalin, 20, of the Town of Newmarket

Charges:

 Accessory after the fact of Murder

The suspects have been held in custody. Mr. Chis will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in the Town of Newmarket on Friday, January 11, 2013 and Ms. Shalin will appear on Thursday,December 20, 2012.
